February Challenge: Organizing Photos (Printed Photos)

Hi again! I'm back with another photo organizing post.  This one is a long one, with a lot of photo's.

I've already shared how to organize your photo's in the computer and how to back them up. Today I'd like to talk about printing and storing your photos safely.

I'd highly recommend using an online site to print your photos. Personally I use Shutterfly and Costco to print mine. (Like I said in my last post, when you upload them to an online site, you have another backup of your photos.)  Typically I'll wait until I get a coupon before I order a lot of photos. I order 4x6, matte or satin finish on my photo's.  I just like the matte finish better than the glossy photos.  That's simply just a matter of preference.

When ordering your photo's, start with the current year and work your way backwards.

Once you've ordered the photos and you have them in hand, there are many options on organizing them. You can organize them in boxes, albums and frames. Actually, I do all three.

BEFORE placing the photo into a box or album or frame, clearly label each photo. Mark the back of the photograph with the month and year.  Trust me, you'll be happy that you did this. (Seriously, I didn't with many of my pictures that I had printed a long time ago and now that I'm trying to organize them, I wish I had done this years ago.) One cool thing about most online photo printing sites, is that you can choose your own wording for the back printing on each photo.

The biggest thing that I'd recommend is keeping all your photo's together in ONE spot.

This here is how I organize and store my photos:
I found these awesome photo boxes...
They are the Iris Large Photo Keepers
 They've got 12 photo cases.
I've sorted mine by month, using these photo journal cards that I've created.  I've been working on a lot of different photo journal cards and I'm hoping to introduce them into my shop soon.  I'll show you more on those in another post.
The cases are the perfect place to store your 4 x 6 photo's.
I keep them all together in an armoire that I have in my craft room/office.  From here, the photo's will go into a yearly photo album, so that my family can enjoy looking through them.  Next week I'll show you the albums that I create.

Also inside that armoire I have a top shelf that holds...
my boys' keepsake albums.
I'll show more on these albums in another post.
and I have one box for each of my boys for memories that won't fit into their albums.

Real quick, I wanted to share a few photos from about a year ago, so you have some idea on where I was and how much progress I've made...
BEFORE
 Just keeping it real, folks...
... Just keeping it real. :)
uhhh... it was a BIG job to tackle!
DURING
But I was determined to take control.  Here is where I started making a little progress.
 and a little more progress.

While I sorted through photo's, I made envelopes for certain family and friends for photo's that I found of their family members that I thought they would like to have.  After sorting, I mailed the photo's to each of them.
AFTER
After a lot of time put in, here is the after of that corner in my craft room:
This armoire is actually the middle piece of the two bookcases that I have in my family room.  I found the set on Craigslist last summer and I still need to re-do this part of it.  I've already repainted the two bookcases.  I shared those with you at Christmas time, you can view that post here.

The hanging file folders are my quick go-to files.  Throughout the year, when I get a photo, (say from my childrens school teacher or from a friend that has my child in the photo) or when my child receives an award, I just slide the photo or memory in the file marked with their name.  Sometime at the end of the year, I'll go through the folders and place them into the proper album or box.  I just picked up this file folder from Target the other day, hung it with a command hook and that's my plan for them.

That's where I'm at today and it feels so good to finally have a little order in the photo organizing department! It's a process.

I still have a long way to go.  You may not think so by looking at these photos, but what you don't see are the photo's that I don't have printed yet. I'm literally still trying to figure out what photo's are and aren't printed yet. I'm working my way backwards. Right now, I have 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009 and 2008 printed, completely organized and the CD backups made. Some of those years are already in albums, others are in these photo keeper boxes.

Don't expect that you will accomplish it all in one day.  Starting NOW is the very best time!  Like I said before the longer you wait, the bigger the pile and the further behind you get.  Today is a GREAT day to begin!!

No matter how you choose to organize your printed photos, just make sure you're storing them in a way that is protecting the photo.
  • Do use acid free storage- acid can discolor your photos over time.
  • Store in a cool, dry place.
  • Don't store your photo's in an attic or basement, where temperature and humidity fluctuate.
  • Don't use plastic bags to organize your photo's.
  • Don't use sticky notes. After time, the adhesive part will stick to your photo.

NOW IT"S YOUR TURN:
  • Order & collect all your photos (keep in mind that you'll need a big area to lay your photos out.)
  • Separate them by year, then by month, then by event.
  • Label each photo clearly by writing on the back.  Include the month and year.
  • Decide on a storage box - I recommend the Iris Double Photo Keeper.
  • Label each box by year.
  • Make dividers for each box and label them by month or use the seperate photo cases.
  • Start adding your photo's to the proper case or section.

Good luck and have fun!  Be sure to come back here at the end of February to link your photo organizing posts.  I simply can't wait to see how you organize your photo's.

May you be a little inspired!
Until next time,
DaNita

February Challenge: Organizing Photos (Back Up)

Hi again! Welcome to another organizing challenge.  If you missed any of the previous challenges, simply click the challenge tab at the top of my blog.

During the month of February we're organizing our photo collections. Last week I showed you how to organize those digital photos on your computer.  Today, I'm sharing how I back everything up and protect my digital photos.

   External Hard Drive Back Up
If you don't have an external hard drive, I highly suggest you get one.  You can find many available {RIGHT HERE} in my Amazon store.  I  have a Seagate external hard drive and I use it to back up everything that I have on my computer, including my photos.

Creating CD'S & Storing them Safely
At the end of the year, I burn a cd that holds all of our family photo's for that year.
Storing the CD's in white cd envelopes,  labeled all cutesy...
 ... super colorful huh?  :)

I store them in these Fellowes brand cd binder sheets found {HERE}.
and they go into the back of my photo journal log.  I showed you the photo journal log last week.

Online Back Up
There are many options for backing up your photos online.  Personally,  I use Shutterfly  and Costco to order my prints.  I have to upload my photos to their website to order them, therefore I have my online backup.  I will go into further details on the actual prints that I order later on this month, including how I store and display them.

Turn the Old into New
Now for photos from "way back," long before there was digital photos (or as my boys would say, in the olden days ;) Remember those things called Slides & Negatives? Yes, let's talk about how we organize them.

Truly, I'm so excited about this one! I was chatting with my awesome aunt Mary a few weeks ago, looking for a little inspiration from her, and she told me about this little machine that turns your negatives into digital photos.  Not only does it work with negatives, but it works with slides and roll film too.
 {source}

It's called the ION FILM 2 SD 35mm Film and Slide Scanner and can be found on Amazon by clicking the source link above.

I did some research and I found out that Walgreens will do this for you too, as will some Costco's. I'll be taking the time to get the negatives that I have and turning them into digitals.  I can't wait until it's all done.

That's it!  That's how I back up my photo collections and it feels so great to know that I have covered by bases and I won't lose our "precious memories."

Later this month,  I'll go into further details about organizing printed photos and how I store and display them.  Be sure to come back and check it out.

Now it's your turn to protect those photos, back them up TODAY and be sure to come back at the end of February to link to the photo organizing link party.  Can't wait to see how you've organized your photos.

May you be a little inspired!
Until next time,
DaNita

February Challenge: Organizing Photos (Digital Photos)

Hello and welcome to another monthly organization challenge. During the month of February I'm challenging you (and myself) to get your PHOTO'S organized.

My photo collection includes both digital and printed photos from the past, which has made organizing them difficult. Throughout the month, I'll show you how to organize both digital photos and printed photos and how to display and preserve your memories.
Today I'm talking about organizing your digital photos, which in my opinion, is where you want to begin.

If your photo's are as unorganized as mine were a year ago, there is no way that you can get them all organized in one month.  However, if you are where I was, please, please, please join the challenge and begin taking control TODAY.  Trust me, you will be so thrilled that you did.

Spending one month on organizing your photo collections will do wonders. The longer you wait, the further behind you become and the larger the task of organizing your photos gets. That's pretty much where I was about a year ago.

Let me explain why this has been the biggest challenge for me. Before I decided that it was time to organize my photos, I really had NO rhyme or reason to anything.  True that! I had absolutely NO organization in the photo department.  I promise you, it was a MESS, a big unorganized (14 years worth) mess and it was driving me crazy. I HAD to take control.

I had some printed photos and ones that weren't printed AND to make it all worse, I had NO clue what had been printed and what hadn't. The biggest challenge for me was deciding where to begin.
After pondering it for a while, I decided that the very first place I needed to begin was organizing the digital photos that I have on my computer.

Although there are a lot of photo organizing software options out there, I don't use them.  I organize the photos on my computer the good ole' fashioned way.

I've set up files in my computer to organize my photos:

FIRST BY YEAR

THEN BY MONTH INSIDE EACH YEAR

THEN BY EVENT INSIDE EACH MONTH

A very important step is to delete the unwanted photos.   This one is hard for me to do, but I realize it's an important step.

I simply right mouse click on the thumbnail and click delete.

Now that you have your photos organized by year, then by month, then by event inside each month, let me show you my way of keeping track of it all.

Every time I connect my camera to my computer and upload the photo's, I write it down on a printable page that I designed and have added to my shop:

 {click the photo to be directed to the item in my shop}

I keep the photo journal logs in a binder,
Which sits right next to my computer. It's right where I need it, when I need it.

This is a habit that I've developed over the last year and it's worked great for me.  I know exactly what photos have been uploaded into my computer and which photos have been printed.  Once I print the photo, I then place a check mark in the appropriate box.  Later this month, I'll show you where a copy of this page goes after the photos from the year are all on the list and printed.  I'll also show you how I organize the ones that have been printed.

I'm still actually a long way from having everything in order, but I have a plan and a goal now and I'm on my way to having organizing bliss in the photo department.  Now that I have that, I feel SO much better and I finally feel like I'm making progress.

The biggest thing that I would like to stress is this - START TODAY! Develop a system and STICK with it.  It'll be so worth your time.

Work backwards. Start from the current year and work your way back.

Don't expect to finish it all this month, it's a process that will take time, but starting today and focusing ONLY on organizing your photo collections this month will be one step closer to having your photos organized and your memories preserved.

Digital photos need to be backed up too.  I will go into further details about that, later this month.

May you be a little inspired!
Until next time,
DaNita
