Storing Children's Toys - Part 3

Remember way back when I shared part of my upstairs toy room with you?  It seems like it was forever long ago.  Time just keeps getting away from me. This summer has been crazy busy! I can't believe that school is about to start for my boys - it seems like they just got out yesterday!

Anyway... I'm finally getting around to showing you the rest of my storage solutions for the toy room.  I still have more to finish in this room to complete it.  My plan is to finish it once my kiddo's are in school.  It's easier to finish projects with one boy vs. four boys and naptime is when that will happen.
So here is the rest of my toy storage solutions in this room:
I've already showed you this post:

and I've showed you this post:

My boys have some larger toys and this is where they belong in the playroom:
Larger items fit nicely in this toy box.
I've had it  for many years.  I recently painted it white to match the room.   I think I've painted it about a gazillion times in the past.  It makes for great storage and my boys get extra seating in the room too.
Across the room are two little closets.
One of the closets store larger toys that don't fit into the toy box:
The other little closet stores Legos:
 Organized in clear plastic drawers.
I made labels for the bins.
Because I have a love affair with delightful labels.
;)
To keep the lego directions organized, I punch a hole into them and attach them to book rings.
they hang on simple hooks that I screwed into the wall.
and THAT my friends is how I store all the toys in my children's toy room.
Again, you can view toy room storage {part 1 HERE} and {part 2 HERE.}

When I designed our house plan, storage was such a huge priority.  If you're thinking of building, DO plan for a lot of storage room, if you can.

Here are my thoughts on Toys. LESS is Better!! With less, it's easier to keep organized and clean AND the kids don't get too overwhelmed with too many toys.

If you have too many toys and you simply can't part with them, try this: Pack some away into boxes, put them in the attic or a storage room and then every so often, switch them out with the toys you have out, packing away the ones they've played with for a while.  Your children will be so excited to see the "old" toys, they'll think it's Christmas and they've just received all BRAND NEW toys!

I still have more of this playroom to show you. Soon, I'll show you where the TV is and how I store DVDs and Wii Games AND more AND the before and after reveal!

So tell me, have you got an organized place for all your kiddo's toys?   Do you have too many toys?  Are you going to pack some away? Or are you going to donate them?  Do share, I'd LOVE to hear from you.

Remember to link up your organized toy areas any Thursday at my Delightfully Inspiring Thursday Link Party.

  1. Love this room! It is so cute. My kids are 3, 2, and 8 mos so I include pics on the labels in our toy area, but we LOVE labels! We also swap out toys. This mostly started because of having such a small toy room at first, but I will keep doing this. The kids really do think it is Christmas when I swap out toys. Sometimes I take out much more than I bring it to clear it up because of gifts, but they always thank me for the "new toy room"... hehehe.

  2. Very nice DaNita! I LOVE organization! My youngest daughter has the tiniest closet, barely 3 feet wide. Since she was a baby I've had to keep it super organized, and that was before toys! I do my best with the space. But I'd like to buy a couple of those clear plastic storage drawers you have. Right now I have a random side table in there with baskets on each level. It's been working fine. I'm just not crazy about the way it looks. : )

  3. I love how you put the lego instructions on book rings and then hung them on hooks. I get so frustrated with these that eventually they just get thrown away and nothing specific gets built again.:) Thanks for the great idea!

  4. Love your space. We use baskets, canvas bins in our playroom. We have tons of built-ins too so it's very Pottery Barn-ish. I love it! I love the bucket idea too. Very cute!

  5. Can I just say you are amazing! Plus you INSPIRE me! That's why I love your blog so much! Instead of making me feel like, "I can't do that...mine will never look that way;" I think, "I CAN do that!" Keep up the phenomenal work DaNita!

  7. Love the little buckets. So cute. My kids do have way too many toys. If it gets to be too much I pack lots of them away in the attic. Most of the time they don't even notice what's missing. :) Would love for you to link this up to my (wow me) wednesday link party going on right now on my blog. :) (I'm a new follower, too!)

  9. I'm visiting from A Lemon Squeezy Home - and the timing is perfect! I have been looking for a way to store the Legos. I especially like your ring and hook storage for the instruction books. Awesome!

  11. I love those cute tags and I'm completely jealous of that toy box! You have done a fantastic job in this room. I wish I could do this to my little boy's room... but he's two. He'd pull those cute little tags off before they even hit the shelf and all the toys in the toy box would be on the floor so he could hide in there (and give his momma a heart attack when I realize how quiet it is and that I can't find him). I'm totally jealous. =]

If you'd like to share this at my link party this weekend, I'd love to have you. Found you via Shabby Nest.

  14. With a toy storage toys are easy to keep organized, easy for children to find toys, as well as easy for children to put toys away.

  15. I love the bucket idea. I will have to use that for more son's cars like you did. I wish I could say the clear drawers we had held all of my son's Legos and building blocks but they didn't. My husband ended up going to Target and buying a clear Rubbermaid container (I think like 20 gallons) and that works perfectly since my son just got all new blocks and legos to put into it.

  16. ok... seriously! mine are 2, 3, & 4. How on earth do you police the toys going back into their beautifully labeled bins? I'd go nuts trying to make that happen every day! Right now I am happy if it all ends up in the playroom at least off the floor! I have toys on rotation, so they have one big set like trains or animals out at a time. Plus some miscellaneous toys. And always books. But how on earth to get them put back "where they go" every day? How do you do it?
